About this Painting:
Overlooking beautiful Poplar Bay, Lake of the Woods.
In my search for the place that Walter J Phillips painted "Poplar Bay" approximately 100 years ago... there was just one spot that could match the horizon and layout in the image. Picnic Point. Currently that beautiful virile tree is gone, and the boats are certainly different now too. Instead of painting the left side of the point as Walter J did, I searched around and was the most attracted to the centre of the point looking in the same direction, and was drawn to the pine trees growing out of the rock, as is evidently what Walter J was attracted to as well. Perhaps the pine tree I focused on was just a baby when he was painting there.
