Kenora sunsets are truly world-renowned, drawing people from across the globe—Minnesota to California, British Columbia to Halifax. But what makes them so special? While the area’s wild beauty, pristine waters, endless shoreline, and incredible fishing are undeniable attractions, it’s the sunsets that leave a lasting impression. They are especially magical reflecting in large bodies of water, with lower elevation islands in the horizon. This perfect combo can be found on Lake of the Woods. There's a feeling of "never-endingness" on that lake, and there's a good reason why... as Lake of the Woods seems to go on forever, being one of the largest freshwater lakes in North America.
Each evening, the sky transforms into a masterpiece of shifting hues—pinks, purples, fiery reds, and oranges blending seamlessly into soft blues. These vivid gradations, reflected on the calm waters of Lake of the Woods, Black Sturgeon, or the Winnipeg River, or surrounding smaller lakes create moments that feel almost magical. Every sunset is different, not just from day to day but across seasons. It’s this fleeting uniqueness that captivates me most.
One of my favourite rituals is chasing sunsets, finding new vantage points in the area to watch the last glow of light touch the treetops before the night sky emerges. As an artist living and working year-round on the water, I’m fortunate to witness this daily magic in spring, summer, fall and winter. Watching these sunsets inspires me deeply. Light has a transformative power, and at sunset, the world shifts in ways that feel both profound and temporary.
What fascinates me most is the impermanence of it all. No two sunsets are ever alike. This impermanence teaches me to pause, be present, and feel grateful for the beauty of the moment. It’s this appreciation of light, transformation, and fleeting magic that informs and inspires my art, which celebrates the rugged beauty and timeless essence of Northwestern Ontario.
