What inspired this painting: I first discovered this island in the summer of 2011 when I was on the lookout for the spot Walter J Phillips painted "Sunset, Lake of the Woods". It’s distinct rock formation gave it away instantly. Since then I’ve been back many times to paint on location from various angles and different times of day from the nearest island. The first time I painted it on location, I had a good look around the island that I was on. It had a wonderful spot to sit and set up a travel easel. I set up there and imagined my predecessors, Walter J and my mentor and friend, Robert Genn, painting there as well. I truly felt a part of the tribe of artists and the connection to these two in this place. I found a tin can tucked between two rocks close by, all rusted out and cut down the middle, and I imagined this might have been Walter J’s lunch. Oh to have a time machine, and see what the area looked like 100 years ago! So, I tucked in a wooden brush with my initials carved in it next to the old can. Maybe future artists will be on the same treasure hunt.
